 The History of the Chapel

The Bonaventure chapel was built in 1960 and dedicated as the Friary Chapel on July 16, 1961. On September 17, 1983 the chapel was rededicated as the University Chapel after the Friary moved from Doyle Hall to its present location west of the main gate.

Saint Bonaventure, a doctor of the Roman Catholic Church is called the Seraphic Doctor because of his ardent, mystical love of God expressed in his life and in his writings.

The motto of Saint Bonaventure and the University: “In Sanctitate et Doctrina” - “In Holiness and Learning.”

The chapel is an expression of the life of Saint Bonaventure and the intellectual tradition of the Franciscan Order. Bonaventure’s life and his writings are portrayed in the six windows, and in the altar reredos.
