* The School of Arts and Sciences requires all majors to complete a foreign language course at the 202 level or higher. Students not prepared to begin at this level will need to take additional courses in the language, which count as general electives.

** Recommended: HIST 101. Europe to 1815 & HIST 102. Europe since 1815, or
HIST 201. United States History to 1865 & HIST 202. United States History Since 1865.

*** ENG 210, 211, 212, 213 and 230 may not be counted as electives except at the discretion of the department head. ENG 380. World Literature and upper-division survey courses are strongly recommended electives.

Comprehensive Examinations

In the spring of the student's senior year, an English major must pass oral comprehensive examinations in English and American literature.

Master's Degrees

For especially well-qualified students, a special program makes it possible to earn both the B.A. and M.A. in English in four years and two summer sessions. In addition, there is a program offering properly qualified students the opportunity to earn both the B.A. in English and the Master of Business Administration in as little as five years of study.
