Requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies

The following table summarizes all requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in international studies. For an overview of a particular course, click on its title.  Foundational Courses – choose three courses

 World Regional Concentration – choose one concentration, five courses

 Within one concentration, choose five courses from at least two disciplines.
     Concentration 1: Asia
     Concentration 2: Latin America
     Concentration 3: Middle East
     Concentration 4: Transatlantic
 
 Note: Each concentration requires a certain proficiency in a foreign language,
 but language courses are not included in the concentration's 15 credits.

 requirement for each concentration. 
 
 Foreign Language 

3 or 6

 The foreign language will vary from 202 to 302 depending on the regional
 concentration selected. A higher level in the foreign language will be accepted.

 NOTE: The Middle East concentration requires 6 credits.

† The Clare College curriculum also includes a three-credit quantitative reasoning requirement. International studies majors satisfy this requirement by passing any of the courses listed in the above table under Mathematics.

 

Foundational Courses

Choose three courses from at least two disciplines. Students are encouraged to take additional courses as general electives.

 

*THEO 200 counts as either a foundational course or a concentration course, but not both.

 

World Regional Concentration

Choose one concentration and within the concentration, choose five courses (15 credits) from at least two disciplines. Each concentration requires a certain proficiency in a foreign language, but language courses are not included in the concentration's 15 credits.

 

Concentration 1: Asia 

**Language is required, but is not part of the 15 credits required for the concentration.

 

Concentration 2: Latin America 

**Language is required, but is not part of the 15 credits required for the concentration.

 

Concentration 3: Middle East 

**Language is required, but is not part of the 15 credits required for the concentration.

 

Concentration 4: Transatlantic 

**Language is required, but is not part of the 15 credits required for the concentration.

 

NOTE: IS 496. Independent Study (1-3 credits) and IS 494. Special Studies on International Topics (3 credits) can be used to substitute for any course listed above except IS 101, IS 102, and IS 491. This substitution must be approved by the adviser, the director of International Studies, and the dean
