The Art History program at St. Bonaventure:
Achieves a fully interdisciplinary approach to the visual arts that draws on the diverse perspectives provided by a liberal arts curriculum. Where fruitful, the program also pursues connections to the schools of business, journalism/mass communication, and education as well.
Utilizes the unique resources and opportunities offered by the University’s fine arts center and curatorial staff. The staff of the Quick Center for the Arts has committed to a high degree of involvement in the art history program by teaching classes in museum studies and sponsoring museum internships both on campus at the QCA and off-campus.
Provides the possibility for students to enrich their study of art history by substantial off-campus programs and museum connections. These include study abroad through the Umbra Institute in Perugia, including study in Florence and Barcelona, and internship programs in New York City (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Biblical Art) and with museums in Western New York (Albright-Knox, Hallwalls, CEPA Gallery).
Prepares majors to pursue career paths related to the visual arts. The course of study seeks to provide majors with a base of knowledge in art history while exposing them to the larger cultural and historical contexts within which we encounter the visual image. The program seeks to offer unique opportunities for majors to pursue the study of art history abroad, off-campus museum internships, curatorial and exhibition opportunities, arts education programs, and five year M.B.A. programs.
