ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University will hold its second annual Family Day, filled with activities throughout the galleries, from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25. Activities start at noon with face-painting and balloon art in the Quick Center atrium, a puppet theater performance of “Hansel and Gretel” in the Beltz Gallery, a scavenger hunt in the Dresser Gallery, a poetry writing event in the Kenney Gallery, and CSI (Culture Scene Investigation), another scavenger hunt-type event in the Letro Laine Gallery.
Guided tours of the museum galleries will also be available, and all of these activities can be enjoyed by all family members free of charge.
At 2 p.m., the Quick Center will host a presentation of the children’s opera “Seasons in the Glen” by Tri-Cities Opera of Binghamton, for which there is a nominal admission charge.
Written by Owego native Charles Knauf, this work was inspired by the composer’s childhood experiences growing up in Owego and playing in Pumpelly’s Glen, an enchanting natural wonder that features a forest, a waterfall, a stream, a natural swimming pool and a cliff. In this original work, the characters are portrayed enjoying what the glen has to offer during each of the four seasons.
This is a staged and fully-costumed show, performed by Tri-Cities Opera’s resident artist and accompanied on the piano by chorus director John Isenberg.
Tickets for this performance of “Seasons in the Glen” are $5 for adults and $2 for children, and may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling (716) 375-2494.
Guests are welcome to come for the children’s opera performance only or to attend any or all of the afternoon’s fun and educational events, said Ludwig Brunner, interim director of the Quick Center. The day’s activities will be rounded off with a cookies and punch reception at 3 p.m.
Family Day at the Quick Center is sponsored by a generous grant from the CUTCO Foundation.
“We are very grateful to the CUTCO Foundation for making all of this possible,” said Brunner. “It is the perfect opportunity for families to enjoy an afternoon at the Quick Center and to learn about the arts in general and the center’s varied art collections and exhibitions in particular. We hope to welcome many families from Olean and the surrounding areas, and we hope that they come back many times, as the center is open to the public year round at no charge.”
The Quick Center’s regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
