SBU's Move Out Sale to benefit service groups set for May 23-25

May 11, 2019

The Franciscan Center for Social Concern (FCSC) will once again host a multi-day sale at St. Bonaventure University to raise funds in support of direct service programming.

This year’s Move Out Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23-25 in Butler Gym, with members of the St. Bonaventure community getting early access from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22.

Students are encouraged to donate any of the following items they don’t plan on taking home, including: clothing, electronics, school supplies, furniture, kitchen items, toiletries, and non-perishable (unopened) food items.

Donation bins have been located in all residence halls and apartments; donations will be accepted until May 19.

Working closely with the environmental groups on campus, the FCSC seeks to keep useable items from going into the garbage after finals each year. Each item donated by students is an item that does not end up in a landfill.

“Encouraging our community to continue the practice of reducing, reusing and recycling truly makes an impact on the amount of refuse generated each year,” said Alice Miller Nation, director of the Franciscan Center for Social Concern. “Realizing that each one of us can be part of the solution to a cleaner environment is a step in the right direction.”

While it’s a great sustainability initiative, the annual Move Out Sale also serves a fundraiser for the FCSC. All revenue generated from the sale will go toward FCSC service programs.

The Franciscan Center for Social Concern is SBU’s home for direct service, social justice, and advocacy programming.

Programs include local service organizations such as the Bona Buddies mentoring program and Warming House soup kitchen, as well as Silver Wolves, which coordinates weekly activities at Eden Heights, and SBU@SPCA, which coordinates weekly volunteer trips to the SPCA.

Silver Wolves began a new program this semester called Friends with Sisters, offering SBU students the opportunity to form a relationship with an Allegany Franciscan sister at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. Bona Buddies also added a new program, Bona Scouts, which takes SBU students to local elementary schools where they offer the scouting curriculum to children in an after-school program.

The FCSC also coordinates the BREAKtheBubble service trips and provides International Service and Immersion Awards for students to serve internationally.
