chair of Bona's Theology & Franciscan Studies

Jun 22, 2018 |

Dr. Joshua BensonDr. Joshua Benson has been named chair of St. Bonaventure University’s Department of Theology and Franciscan Studies. He begins work Aug. 1.

An associate professor in the School of Theology and Religious Studies at The Catholic University of America since 2008, Benson was a visiting assistant professor in St. Bonaventure’s Franciscan Institute summer program six times between 2006 and 2017.

“Dr. Benson is internationally renowned in Franciscan scholarship and his reputation as both a scholar and teacher precedes him,” said Dr. David Hilmey, dean of the School of Arts & Sciences.

“He represents new, cutting-edge research in Franciscan theology and his leadership will elevate the department and the university in this field of study. I’m thrilled to have him lead our newly formed Department of Theology and Franciscan Studies.”

Benson earned his doctorate in historical theology from Saint Louis University (2007), his master’s in Franciscan studies from St. Bonaventure (2002), and his bachelor’s in philosophy from Canisius College (2000).

In November, in a move designed to strengthen both academics and mission, St. Bonaventure merged the Department of Theology and School of Franciscan Studies. The department is housed under the School of Arts and Sciences.

“I look forward to developing a strong partnership with Dr. Benson as chair of the new department. Having him on campus will strengthen the research and publications work of the Franciscan Institute,” said Fr. David Couturier, O.F.M. Cap., executive director of the Franciscan Institute and director of University Planning.
