On a brisk morning six years ago, my family set out on what would be our last college visit — ever. We had already seen many colleges but my son insisted that my husband and I save our opinions until we saw the university that had most impressed him when he had visited there with his high school classmates.
This road trip to St. Bonaventure University would forever change our lives. It was the day we, as parents, knew that our child would not only be safe but he would be given every opportunity to succeed. As we drove off the campus that day, we were confident that he had found his new home away from home. His decision to choose Bonaventure led our entire family on the Good Journey!
My children are each very different and even though my husband and I fell in love with Bona's that day, never in a million years did we think that all four of our children would choose to attend that special university!
Our oldest, Josh, ‘12, studied sports marketing and management while playing club hockey and just about every intramural sport Bona's offered. Immediately, he met a great group of friends who became like family to all of us. Trips to Family Weekend and to his hockey games assured us that Bona’s was where he was meant to be.
Fast forward two years to my daughter, Lindsey, ‘14. She is our socialite who loves children and has wanted to be a teacher since she could reach the chalkboard. She, too, felt at home at Bona’s but didn’t want to "just follow" her brother. She continued to hear wonderful things about Bona's during her search process. She decided she wasn't going to short-change herself. She has made her Bona experience her own: excelling in her major, becoming a Bona Buddies mentor and even studying abroad. She began her master's program as a senior and is confident in her teaching skills after her extensive hours in the elementary school classrooms.
Our third child, Jake, ‘16, has always marched to his own drum and has never followed anyone. School did not come as easily for him and we weren't sure he was ready for SBU. But, Jake saw it differently and became a man on a mission to prove he, too, deserved the chance to be extraordinary at SBU. He enrolled at a community college during the summer, earned good grades and headed off to SBU. We couldn't be more proud of his maturity and determination during his first two years at Bona’s. He is majoring in sociology, with a criminal justice minor.
Joe is our youngest. As we drove away from Josh's residence hall on that first day, Joe said. “I am probably going to come here, too.” For six years, he had been feeling all the Bona's love and had witnessed the incredible bond among the students and faculty. He understands that the work is real and that Bonaventure faculty and staff help you every step of the way. He has seen how the professors want you to succeed and how your friends won't let you fail. It was inevitable that he, too, would want the same kind of positive college experience his siblings have enjoyed. So, he has chosen to become a member of the Class of 2018 at St. Bonaventure!
We have watched our children grow into strong, independent individuals who have also developed spiritually in the Franciscan environment of compassion. The St. Bonaventure family — from the dining hall staff to the professors — teaches by example how important it is to care about others.
My husband and I are thrilled that each of our children chose St. Bonaventure for, what we feel, is one of the best educational experiences available today.
Our Bonaventure family encourages your family to seriously consider St. Bonaventure University! We hope you will visit to its beautiful campus and see how Bona’s can fulfill your son's or daughter's goals and aspirations during a great Bona journey!
Good luck in this important decision-making process. I hope to see you at Family Weekend.
