Dr. Hilmey has served as dean of the School of Arts & Sciences since 2016 and previously was chair of the Chemistry department and Director of the Honors program during his ten years at St. Bonaventure.
Dr. Hilmey is a native of Buffalo, NY and completed his PhD in Chemistry at The Ohio State University in 2006, following his B.S. in Medicinal Chemistry at the University at Buffalo. He then spent time working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Cornell University in the Chemical Biology field. Dr. Hilmey’s research interests led to 30 publications with 350 citations of his work to date.
Dr. Hilmey’s passion for education began when he became a faculty member at SBU teaching organic chemistry. His teaching philosophy focuses on building student knowledge by developing interest and enthusiasm. Dr. Hilmey emphasizes experiential learning, mentoring over 20 students while active in the chemistry department.
In his work as Dean, he encourages faculty to innovate in the classroom and empower students to learn through challenging experiences such as research, immersive opportunities, and service learning. Student learning, personal growth, and future success are factors which drive the School of Arts & Sciences. According to Hilmey, the strong faculty-student relationship makes Bonaventure one of the finest teaching institutions in the region and the state.
When not at work, Dr. Hilmey spends time with his wife and three children, enjoys golf, camping, basketball, and is an avid Bills, Sabres, and Bonnies fan.
