Book on terrorism edited by St. Bonaventure's Dr. Robin Valeri makes '10 best in 2019' list

Aug 08, 2019 |

Robin ValeriA book on terrorism edited by Dr. Robin Valeri, professor of psychology at St. Bonaventure University, has made BookAuthority’s list of the 10 best new criminology ebooks to read in 2019.

“Terrorism in America,” edited by Valeri and Dr. Kevin Borgeson, associate professor of criminal justice at Salem State University, examines the beliefs, actions and impacts of American-based terrorists and terror organizations.

“No competing text offers such in-depth and nuanced coverage of the radical ideologies behind these attacks, or the ensuing fear domestic terrorism creates, as well as the strategies to combat violent extremism,” notes the BookAuthority synopsis. It calls the book “highly readable, a core text for domestic terrorism courses, and an excellent supplement for any counterterrorism or homeland security course.”

BookAuthority promotes itself as the world’s leading site for nonfiction recommendations. It identifies and rates the best nonfiction books based on public mentions, recommendations, ratings, sentiment, popularity, sales history and other factors.

In “Terrorism in America,” Valeri and Borgeson and their contributors draw on theories from criminology, psychology and sociology to explore the ideologies of right-wing, left-wing, and extremist religious groups, exploring how and why they convert followers, recruit financially, and take extreme action against others. The book was published in May by Routledge, the world’s leading academic publisher in the humanities and social sciences.

Valeri has researched, written and presented at professional conferences on hate, hate groups, and terrorism. This fall, Valeri will be presenting “Ignited by Hate: An Examination of Hate Incidents with Fire or Explosives as the Weapon” and “Hate Homicide: A Twenty Year Follow-Up” at the annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology. Her book “Hate Crimes: Victims, Motivations and Typologies,” co-edited with Borgeson, was released in spring 2018.

Valeri joined the St. Bonaventure faculty in 1994. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Syracuse University and bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. She was honored by the university earlier this year with the Award for Professional Excellence in Research and Publishing.
