St. Bonaventure University will welcome alumnus Michael Hickey, ’84, to campus in March as the university’s fifth guest speaker in its annual Building Extraordinary Leaders series.
Hickey is executive vice president and president of Global Institutional business for Ecolab Inc., the global leader in water, hygiene and energy technologies and services that protect people and vital resources.
The yearly leadership program brings industry and community frontrunners to campus and highlights diverse perspectives as part of a series funded by a gift from the university’s Class of 1963. Guest speakers are notable, high-achieving alumni.
The university will welcome Hickey, an SBU marketing graduate, to campus March 12 and 13 as the 2018 Leader in Residence.
“Michael Hickey is a distinguished alum of the School of Business and we are honored to have him as the 2018 Leader in Residence,” said Dr. Matrecia James, dean of the business school. “I had the pleasure of meeting him last summer. I am excited that he will be on campus to share his insight and foresight related to regional leadership in the industry and the future of sales and marketing education.”
Hickey’s visit will include an open presentation to the campus community, as well as small-group discussions and a keynote dinner celebration.

During Hickey’s 33-year tenure at Ecolab, he has held a number of key executive positions, including executive vice president and president of Institutional North America, senior vice president and general manager of multiple operating units, as well as senior vice president of Global Business Development.
With 2016 sales of $13 billion and 48,000 associates, Ecolab delivers comprehensive solutions and on-site service to promote safe food, maintain clean environments, optimize water and energy use and improve operational efficiencies for customers in the food, healthcare, energy, hospitality and industrial markets in more than 170 countries around the world. In November 2016, Ecolab and the National Restaurant Association joined forces to launch a campaign focused on providing the restaurant industry with a broad range of tools and resources to help combat the spread of the norovirus.
Ecolab has been recognized internationally for its commitment to sustainable business practices.
For the fourth consecutive year, Ecolab has been recognized by Newsweek, which ranked the company second on its 2017 list of the greenest companies in the U.S.
On Jan. 10, the World Environment Center (WEC) announced that Ecolab will receive its 34th annual Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development. The WEC selected Ecolab to receive the award for its initiatives to promote global water conservation, its sustainability commitments and partnerships, and its integration of sustainability within innovation processes.
In February, Ecolab Inc. was recognized as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute, the global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices. Ecolab has been named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies every year since the list’s inception in 2007.
Hickey is a member of several industry organizations and serves on the board of directors of the National Restaurant Association, the Women’s Foodservice Forum, the International Franchise Association and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Upper Midwest. He is past chair of the board of directors of the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association and past chair of the board of trustees of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. He is a member of the Board of Trustees at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minn.
Hickey received a B.B.A. in marketing from St. Bonaventure in 1984. He completed the Global CEO Program led by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, IESE Business School at the University of Navarra in Sao Paulo, and the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai, as well as executive programs through Stanford University and Pennsylvania State University.
Hickey lives in Eden Prairie, Minn., with his wife, Kristeen “Kris” Kenville Hickey, ’84, and their five children.
