The Health Care Access Coalition will host the program “Beyond the Affordable Care Act: Lessons from Other Countries” at 7 p.m. Sept. 17, in the auditorium of the William F. Walsh Science Center at St. Bonaventure University.
Speaker Dr. Peter Orris has a history of involvement, nationally and internationally, in health care justice and civil rights. He has advocated for the elimination of profit and racism in health care and has opposed corporate policies that poison the environment of the developing world.
The program is free and open to the public.
Orris is a professor and associate director of the Great Lakes Center for Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health of the University Of Illinois School Of Public Health (a World Health Organization Collaborating Center) and is the director of its Occupational Health Service Institute and Global Toxics Policy Program.
He maintains an active clinical and teaching practice in occupational medicine and is the chief of the clinical department at the University of Illinois Medical Center. He also is a senior attending physician in the Division of Occupational Medicine at the Stroger Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital), where he has worked for more than 30 years.
A member of dozens of professional organizations, Orris serves on the National Physicians Alliance Advisory Board. His visit is made possible with funding from the Visiting Scholars Committee of St. Bonaventure University.
Orris graduated Harvard College in 1967, Yale School of Public Health in 1970, and the Chicago Medical School of the Rosalind Franklin University in 1975. He lives in Chicago with his wife, a retired pediatrician.
