#Bonas celebrates anonymous $5M gift, largest ever; wraps up fiscal year

Aug 01, 2019 |

By Susan Anderson

A $5 million-dollar gift committed by an anonymous donor in support St. Bonaventure University’s School of Health Professions highlighted the close of another successful fundraising year for the university.

The landmark donation, which is the largest single gift in the school’s history, will help renovate Francis Hall as the future home of the School of Health Professions.

The anonymous donor noted the importance of this academic initiative and the upward trajectory of the university as key reasons for the donation.

“This remarkable gift ensures that St. Bonaventure continues to thrive and to offer academic programs that students and parents desire,” said Dr. Dennis R. DePerro, president of the university. “It speaks to the donor’s profound belief in doing good and illustrates what is best about our community as it works together to connect students to the true meaning and potential of their existence.”

The School of Health Professions, which launched in 2016, offers undergraduate degree programs in Health Science, Public Health and RN to B.S. in Nursing. Graduate programs in Occupational Therapy and Physician Assistant Studies are in development. Plans are also in place for several other clinical and non-clinical degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels over the next five years.

A significant component of the school is a focus on the vital importance of the patient/caregiver relationship, which stems from the university’s Franciscan mission.

News of the milestone gift came as the university marked the close of the 2018-2019 Fiscal Year.

Between June 1, 2018, and May 31, 2019, 5,807 alumni and friends donated more than $19.5 million overall for the university. This includes raising more than $2.55 million for The Bonaventure Fund, surpassing the budgeted goal of $2.54 million that is essential in support of operations.

“With the largest gift in the university’s history and the continued support of alumni and friends, a bolder Bonaventure is being realized,” said Bob Van Wicklin, vice president for Advancement.

“People are passionate about this university and its students. It’s an exciting time for the Bona family.”
