Empowering students through personal and professional development opportunities is the goal of the new #BuzzyChallenge at St. Bonaventure University.
During the month of June, alumni and friends of the university are encouraged to take on the #BuzzyChallenge of raising $5,000 in 30 days. Achieving the goal will unlock a $10,000 gift to the fund from its founders.
St. Bonaventure’s Board Chair Bob Daugherty,’77, honored the positive attitude of former trustee member Bernard “Buzzy” Stoecklein by establishing the Buzzy Fund in 2015.
As a young businessman, success came fast for Stoecklein — so did failure. But advice from a mentor and the gift of a wooden nickel set the Pittsburgh native on a new path.
To remember the lessons he learned during that low point, Stoecklein carved the following words into one side of the wooden nickel: If it is to be, it is up to me. On the flip side, he engraved the letters PMA and PDC, acronyms for a Positive Mental Attitude and Personal Direct Contact. These became his maxims and how he intended to positively impact the lives of others.
Since then Stoecklein has shared inspirational messages with people around the world. Today he is chairman and CEO of CMS-MidAtlantic, Inc., and the namesake of the Buzzy Fund at St. Bonaventure, where he served three terms as a trustee.
The Buzzy Fund is designed to reimburse part, or all, of the cost for a student to advance professionally — by attending seminars or conferences; taking entrance exams such as the GRE, MCAT, LSAT and GMAT; preparing or registering for teacher certification; or taking licensing or certification tests such as the CPA. Any Bona student with financial need, regardless of major, can apply to receive funding.
A grant from the fund is allowing Philippe “PJ” Neubauer, a member of the Class of 2019 and a native of Manhattan, to prepare for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). It will also subsidize the cost of testing.
“Receiving funding from the Buzzy Fund gives me the opportunity to prepare for graduate school in a timely manner," said Neubauer, who is scheduled to take the GRE this August.
As a sport studies major with a concentration in sports management, Neubauer said he wants to impact the sports industry in any way he can. “By going on to graduate school, I will have the opportunity to include administration studies with my undergraduate sport studies, and can work in the professional sports leagues and higher education for athletics.”
