This one-credit course for all first-year students will help you make the most of your freshman year. It combines specific academic topics, general study skills and content from the All Bonaventure Reads text.
Specialized sections for students with majors in Business, Education, Journalism/Mass Communications and the Arts & Sciences, as well as for students who are undecided about their major.
The goals of University 101 are:
- To provide incoming students with techniques to improve academic performance.
- To provide an academic forum in which students are encouraged to explore issues related to the adjustment to college life.
- To provide an opportunity for students to develop a mentor relationship with their instructor.
The Structure of the Course
Academic content provides a context for teaching and assessing fundamental academic skills such as using technology, time management, listening skills, note taking, and learning from textbooks.
The course also addresses your transition into college life. Issues like identifying personal goals and priorities, information about campus resources, dealing with stress, drug and alcohol abuse, and other social issues are discussed in an intimate, small-group setting. The course will allow you to reflect on your experiences as a student in a supportive, academic setting.
Instructors frequently integrate "passport activities" to encourage involvement in academic, spiritual, and social opportunities outside of the classroom. Discussions will often spring from these co-curricular events, so participation in all aspects of University life is strongly encouraged.
Instructors also have the opportunity to include first-year mentors in their courses, bringing the voices of experienced students into the conversation.
