Why Community Mental Health Counseling at SBU?

The Community Mental Health Counseling Program is a registered program with the NY State Office of Professions, and is a CACREP accredited program within the NCATE accredited School of Education. The Counselor Education program is longstanding, originating in the 1950’s on campus, and in 1994 at the Buffalo Center. Evening classes on campus and weekend cohort classes at the Buffalo Center facilitate opportunities for students who are working to complete the non-fieldwork courses at convenient times. The small class sizes on campus and the weekend cohort model enable students to foster strong relationships with other classmates and faculty. The Counselor Education program provides students with extensive theoretical knowledge and a significant amount of hands-on clinical experience, while building professional connections and resources valuable for future employment. These goals are facilitated by the existence of strong connections with local agencies in both locations, and the on campus Collaborative Counseling Training Clinic. |
