The MSED Adolescent Literacy Program differs from many other literacy programs in New York State because it is a separate master’s degree program from the MSED Childhood Literacy program.
There are four courses that separate the program from the Childhood Program and those courses help the students focus more clearly on the literacy needs of adolescent learners. READ 525, Problems of Literacy in the Secondary School, focuses on issues that interfere with the literacy of secondary learners. READ 512, Adolescent Literature, explores the types of materials that can be used in working with adolescents on their literacy. READ 585, Literacy Instruction for Individuals and Small Groups—Adolescent, is a methods course devoted solely to the literacy needs of adolescent learners, and READ 595, Clinical Practicum in Adolescent Literacy, allows students to work with adolescent learners on their literacy.
Students report that the four course focus on adolescent literacy, along with the other courses in the program, makes our program very strong in preparing teachers of adolescent literacy
