In a rematch of last year’s Empire Rugby Conference final, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies took on the Stony Brook Seawolves on Long Island in a match that was circled on many people's calendars since the schedule was released. Unfortunately, after bringing the score close and playing one of the better second halves of their season, the Bonnies couldn't get the try that would have won them the game.

On October 13, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies took on the Fordham Rams in what was a must-win for the ruggers if they wanted to keep their dream alive of competing at the USA D1-AA Rugby National Championship. The Bonnies also looked to shake off their loss to Fordham in the playoffs of their inaugural D1 year four years ago when I was a freshman.

A View From the Captain's Seat     

  

 

Every away game for the St. Bonaventure men’s rugby team is a business trip.  It all starts with the night before the game.  Hydration, relaxation and a good night of sleep are crucial.  When I wake up, I find it important to follow the same morning routine.  Morning routine is the same and I am out the door on the way to the Hickey.  A good breakfast and some snacks for the bus are a pre-game ritual I would hate to mess up as a forward.  

 

  

Bonnies Backs Open Up vs Syracuse    

 

Saturday, October 20th, 2012    

In a reversal from the last 18 months of play, the St. Bonaventure backline carried their teammates in the forward pack to a 35-24 win over Syracuse University on Saturday. Backs Brendan Allman, Ryan Brennan, Kevin McCorry and Chuck Meagher scored through long breaks in open play. Alex Brussard and Evan Meister added tries in tight for the Bonnies.  

 

 

 

Bonnies Sit at 2-1-1 Through Week Five 

 

Battling some early-season injuries and a suspension to captain Alex Brussard, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies rugby team finished the first five weeks of the season at 2-1-1, including a bye week.  With six matches left to play over the final five weeks, here is a look back at the Bona Ruggers season to this point.

Bonnies Draw With Black Knights

Coming off of a momentous 29-17 win over defending league champion Stony Brook, the Army Black Knights were primed to run away with the Empire Rugby Conference. However, with the Bonnies playing for their playoff lives, neither team could claim a decisive victory along the Banks of the Allegheny River, finishing with a 15-15 tie.

Undefeated Doggies Show Early Season Bite

When the schedule was announced, Brockport looked like a team that could have a tough September, opening with Rutgers and a trip to Army before taking on St. Bonaventure during Family Weekend. But after two weeks of Empire Conference play, Brockport is sitting at 1-0-1 after thrashing Rutgers and drawing with Army at West Point.                                

 

 

 

Bonnies Open Season With Win Under the Lights

With dozens of alumni supporters in the crowd, the St. Bonaventure men’s rugby team defeated University at Buffalo Friday night under the lights at UB’s Kunz Stadium. Scoring three tries to Buffalo’s single touch down, the Bonnies won 26-5. 

 

  

 

 

 Bonnies Open With Rival Bulls

After splitting last season’s series – with the home team winning each match – the St. Bonaventure University Bonnies and University at Buffalo Bulls will only have one opportunity to determined the top team in Western New York for 2012. Friday night under the lights at Kunz Stadium on UB’s campus, SBU will open their Empire Rugby Conference campaign at 8:45 p.m. against the rival Bulls.                                     

  

 

 

Former Captain Joins Coaching Staff

The St. Bonaventure University men’s rugby team announced the addition of Steve Blaske `06 to its coaching staff. Blaske, a Portville native, played for SBU from 2004 to 2006, helping guide the club to a pair of playoff berths and the 2004 New York State Division 2 championship.                                   

 

 

Brussard and Meister Look To Pick Up Where They Left Off Last Year

At some point when an All-Time St. Bonaventure team is named, recent graduates Nick Maurer, Nick Sylor, Ben Atkinson and Chris Schott will be up for selection, but going into Fall 2012 they will need to be replaced if the Bonnies expect to repeat their 15-2 campaign of 2011-12.                                   
 
 

The Empire Conference Top Players Honored

Empire Rugby announced their inaugural All-Conference team with five Bonnies earning selection. Captain and western division MVP Nick Maurer ’11 ’12 headlines the team at second row. He is joined in the forward pack by loose head prop Alex Brussard ’13 and openside flanker Evan Meister ’15. Brussard and Meister will partner as captain and vice captain respectively in the 2012 season. Vice Captain Nick Sylor ’11 ’12 lines up at left wing while Kevin McCorry ’13 was tabbed as the backup scrum half and fly half.                                   

  

 

St. Bonaventure University's men's rugby team sky high after trip to Holiday Valley

It wasn’t a bird or a plane flying through the air in Ellicottville last month. It was the St. Bonaventure men’s rugby team.
