Why Management at SBU

Management is an ideal major for grooming the corporate generalist. It develops decision-makers who are well equipped with a broad knowledge of all areas of business, integrating accounting, business information systems, finance, marketing, economics, and allied disciplines.

The overriding educational goal of the Management Department is to prepare students for a professional managerial career. Graduates of the Management Program have career opportunities available to them in a variety of business and not-for-profit organizations. The major provides students with the possibility of developing either the behavioral or quantitative emphasis in the areas of general management.

Careers in the area of production management, such as production supervisor, plant manager, or line supervisor are quite rewarding. Courses in Production and Operations Management, Information and Decision Support Systems, and the behavioral sciences prepare a student for this challenging area of Management.

Another area, which has experienced rapid growth, is organizational behavior and/or organizational development, and our courses prepare the student for positions in this area.

A strong analytical base provided by Information and Decision Support Systems and Business Information Systems can be augmented with other approved courses to obtain a minor in Quantitative Analysis for Business. A minor in Business Information Systems is also considered an attractive option for students.

The quantitative and computer-related courses may be chosen, for they provide a solid foundation for careers in system analysis, business information systems, marketing research, and materials management and planning. As quality of work life becomes more important, there is an increasing demand for trained personnel managers. Courses in Labor Relations and Human Resource Management are offered to specifically prepare a student for a career in this area.

Other possible job opportunities lie in the areas of international business, purchasing, urban planning, health care administration, and plant management.
