FBI agents discuss white collar crime in BAA presentation on campus
Three FBI agents, one a St. Bonaventure University graduate, discussed white collar crime in a presentation on campus hosted by the Bonaventure Accounting Association (BAA).
In addition to presenting a case scenario on fraud, the agents discussed job opportunities within the bureau.

Dean Balthazard co-authors paper accepted for publication
Dr. Pierre Balthazard, professor of
management and dean of the School of Business at St. Bonaventure
University, has co-authored a paper that has been accepted as the
feature article in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Applied
Psychology.
Other co-authors of the paper, titled
“The Psychological and Neurological Bases of Leaders Self-Complexity and
Effects on Adaptive Decision-Making," include Dr. Sean Hannah of Wake
Forest University, Dr. David Waldman of Arizona State University, Maj.
Peter Jennings of the U.S. Army, and Dr. Robert Thatcher of the
University of South Florida.
The study examined 103 military leaders,
including 29 captains and majors that had recently returned from combat
missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

King, Case analyze mission statements of largest firms in 10 countries
Darwin L. King, professor of accounting, and Dr. Carl J. Case,
professor of management, presented a paper at the Allied Academies
International Conference held in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 10-13, 2012. The
paper was titled “2012 Mission Statements: A Ten Country Global
Analysis.” The paper was selected for publication in the Allied
Academies Strategic Management Journal. A maximum of 25 percent of
accepted papers are selected for publication in the journal. The paper
discussed similarities and differences in the mission statements of the
largest 25 firms in 10 countries. The mission statement content was
studied with emphasis on the stakeholders and goals/objectives mentioned
in the statements.
Journal accepts professors paper on AACSB accredited schools
Dr. Carl J. Case, professor of business information systems, and
Darwin L. King, professor of accounting had their paper "Web 2.0
Implementation: An Analysis of AACSB Accredited Schools of Business From
An International Perspective" accepted to be published in the Academy
of Educational Leadership Journal. The paper was also presented at the
Allied Academies 2012 Fall International Conference held in Las Vegas,
Nev., on Oct. 11, 2012. The paper was also published in the Summer 2012
edition of Journal of Business and Behavioral Sciences.

Accounting lecturer named NCAA faculty athletic representative
ST. BONAVENTURE — Michael Kasperski, a lecturer of accounting in the School of Business at St. Bonaventure University, has been appointed to a three-year term as the university’s NCAA faculty athletic representative. The appointment was made by Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., university president.
Kasperski will serve as a liaison between the university and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. His role is to help maintain an appropriate balance between academics and athletics on campus. Read more

Meet the Accountants Night Sept. 26 in the Doyle Dining and Trustees
rooms. Nineteen firms and organizations
set up tables so that recruiters
could interact with potential job candidates.

Fischer named member of accounting journal editorial and review board
Dr. Carol Fischer, associate dean of the School of Business and professor of accounting at St. Bonaventure University, was named a member of the Editorial Advisory and Review Board for the journal Issues in Accounting Education.

Entrepreneurs discuss business with St. Bonaventure students
Olean entrepreneurs Frank Jester, who owns Jester’s Hot Rod Garage, and his son Adam, who owns a computer networking business, spoke to Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) students in Murphy Professional Building on campus, then went out to a parking lot behind Plassmann Hall to see part of Frank’s business -- about 10 classic hot rods.
The Entrepreneurship Club, a subdivision of SIFE, sponsored the event. Matt O’Connell, co-president of the Entrepreneurship Club, said the presentation helped students realize that business dreams do come true through hard work, passion and dedication. Read more.

VITA volunteers earn local taxpayers $700,000 in refunds
St. Bonaventure accounting students volunteering with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program earned local Cattaraugus county residents a combined $700,000 in tax returns. The students gave 2,000 hours of their time from Jan. 26 through April 3, and filed a total of 450 tax returns. Read more about VITA's accomplishments during the 2012 tax season.

E-Journal publishes professors's paper on income tax legislation
Darwin L. King, professor of accounting, and Dr. Carl J. Case, professor of business information systems, had a paper titled “Early United States Income Tax Legislation and Its Influence on Current Practices” published in the American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences (ASBBS) E-Journal. The paper was presented at the 19th Annual ASBBS Conference that was held in Las Vegas on Feb. 23-26, 2012. This paper was selected as best paper in the Accounting History Track.

King article focuses on hike in timber casualty losses, tornados in 2011
Darwin L. King, professor of accounting, and Edward D. King had an article titled “The Timber Casualty Loss Audit Process” published in the December 2011 issue of the Oil, Gas & Energy Quarterly. With a record number of tornados in 2011, the number of timber casualty losses increased tremendously. This article discussed what the IRS does when conducting a casualty loss audit. The article was based on auditor training materials, including the IRS Audit Technique Guides. This is the 29th article published by King in the Oil, Gas & Energy Quarterly since 2000.

Alumnus offers advice to young job-seekers in SIFE magazine article
Andrew Mantilia credits Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) for helping him land a position as senior associate in the Global Grants Program with KPMG, one of the world's largest professional services networks and one of the Big Four auditors. In the "Alumni Insights" column in the Fall 2011 issue of Career Connections, a SIFE publication, Mantilia says his opportunity with KPMG was the result of attending a career fair during a SIFE regional competition right after his junior year at SBU. In the article, Mantilia offers advice on getting a good job and growing in it. Mantilia earned his BBA, with a concentration in business information systems, in 2008, and his MBA, with a concentration in finance and accounting, in 2009. Read complete article

Bysiek receives Forty Under 40 honor
Edward J. Bysiek III, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Accounting since 2006, was selected as one of Buffalo Business First’s 2011 Forty Under 40 honorees. This award recognizes business leaders throughout Western New York who have demonstrated exemplary leadership skills in business, civic and educational endeavors. Bysiek, owner and chief executive officer of Bysiek CPA, PLLC, was selected for his professional success, community involvement and contributions to higher education.
An awards ceremony was held on Nov. 10 in Buffalo to honor the recipients.
In addition to his accounting practice, Bysiek is a member of the Olean Rotary Club, a past president of the Institute of Management Accountants, and has volunteered his time as assistant basketball coach at Archbishop Walsh Academy. He has also authored two books.

SBU students quiz alumnus on international business
Richard (Dick) P. Kearns, ’72, who retired in 2010 as chief administrative officer at Zurich Financial Services Group, told St. Bonaventure students that their grounding in the Franciscan tradition and the SBU connections they cultivate can be keys to success in the international business community.
Kearns took questions from a panel of students representing various majors in the School of Business. The event was held in the Rigas Theater of the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.
Kearns began his career at Price Waterhouse in 1972, was admitted as a partner in 1984. He was appointed leader of global partner affairs following the merger that created PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1998.
He joined Zurich's senior management team in Switzerland in 2002, and continues to serve as a senior advisor for the firm.

Eugene McQuade, '71, Citibank CEO, offers advice to students
Citibank CEO Eugene McQuade, a 1971 St. Bonaventure graduate, visited campus Oct. 21 as a guest speaker in the School of Business’s Visiting Executive Series.
McQuade shared with accounting and finance majors his experiences in the business world. He urged students to think globally, study abroad, be able to conduct business in the local language and be credentialed.
He also met with School of Business faculty to review plans for the McQuade Center for Accounting Excellence endowment. McQuade and his wife, Peggy, recently committed $2 million to establish the endowment, which will provide scholarship aid to promising incoming accounting majors; funding to recruit, retain and support the work of highly qualified, dedicated faculty; and support for student programming, advisement and professional development. The gift is a significant step in helping the University reach its goal of $15 million for the construction of a new Business Center.
A veteran banker, McQuade has held executive positions at Merrill Lynch, Bank of America Corporation and FleetBoston. He served as a member of the University’s Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2007, and presently serves as director of XL Group plc, an Ireland-based insurance and reinsurance company.

'82 grad receives Phyllis Goldman Encouragement Award for Women
Accountant Elaine Buffington of Auburn, N.Y., a 1982 St. Bonaventure graduate, received the 2011 Phyllis Goldman Encouragement Award for Women based on her success as an entrepreneurial businesswoman.
The award, given by the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce, goes to women who have pursued an entrepreneurial endeavor and encouraged other women to do the same. Read more

Paper by business faculty earns research award
Darwin King, professor of accounting, Dr. Carl Case, professor of management information systems, and Kathleen Premo, lecturer in management, presented a paper titled “An International Mission Statement Comparison: United States, France, Germany, Japan, and China” at the Allied Academies International Conference held in Las Vegas on Oct. 12-14, 2011, in Las Vegas.
The paper earned a Distinguished Research Award, which was awarded to only 18 percent of the papers at the conference. Earning this award insures that the paper will be published in the Academy of Strategic Management Journal (ASMJ).

Journal publishes social networking paper by Case and King
Dr. Carl J. Case, professor of business information systems, and Darwin L. King, professor of accounting, had a paper titled "AACSB Accredited Institutions and The Web 2.0: Lagging Behind Businesses In Social Networking Implementation" published in the journal Issues in Information Systems. The paper was also presented at International Association for Computer Information Systems 2011 Conference in Mobile, Ala., on Oct. 6, and earned the honorable mention award for the best pedagogy paper.

Journal publishes state timber tax article by King and King
Darwin L. King, professor of accounting, and Edward D. King had an article titled “State Timber Taxes: A Brief Overview” published in the June 2011 issue of the Oil, Gas & Energy Quarterly. The paper reviewed the various types of taxes assessed by states upon the sale of timber. The timber taxation system of seven states is reviewed in detail. This is the 28th article Darwin King has published in this journal since 2000.
