Classical Languages

The goal of the department is to contribute firsthand knowledge of Greek and Latin literature, for it is in this body of writings that the student may discern most of the concepts upon which our Western World bases its culture.

The general courses in the classics offer broad background for both major and non-major students.

The more advanced and specialized courses emphasize the contributions made by outstanding political, literary and intellectual figures of Greek and Roman times.

The student who chooses to major in classics should have acquired, at the completion of all courses, a knowledge of classical mythology, history, literature and art, in addition to a general liberal arts education.

The advanced courses are also available as electives to students concentrating in other areas, and are intended to provide such students with a balanced education.
