Why Study Nonviolence at SBU?

Here are some recent comments from students in the program.

The Philosophy of Nonviolence was a great course.  I think it should be mandatory that students take it.  I learned so much.  Most importantly I learned how to see situations from different points of view, and it showed me the type of person I wanted to be. Dr. Gan was great instructor. I have never had a teacher that was so passionate about what they taught.  It was very impressive how he related the course material to so many aspects of his life and the lives of others.  His desire to show the class what he had learned and how he came to learn those things was very powerful and influential. He made me want to learn for the sake of learning and being a better human being, not just to get a good grade.  That is what teaching is all about. His respectful nature and friendly demeanor toward the students was just another reason I felt privileged to be in his class.

Dr. Gan's classes are always worthwhile.  His personal experience contributes greatly to the courses he teaches.  He makes an effort to connect with the students and make them feel comfortable in his classroom.  The moments of silence he starts the class with are often the most meaningful part of my day.  I have always felt comfortable discussing my thoughts about the class with Dr. Gan, and he has always been willing to listen.  Without a doubt, he is one of the best professors this university has to offer.

The readings in this class were extremely thought-provoking.  The authors were very deep thinkers.  Although I did not agree with everything the authors said, they showed me so many different ways of looking at situations and helped me expand my mind so much.
