To the students invited by an Arts & Sciences faculty member to participate in the SRCE Exposition: congratulations! This page provides information about the Expo for you and your mentor.
Posters: An Overview
Each student or group of students may exhibit one or two posters. (In practice, almost all projects can been summarized on one poster.) A poster is created by putting the desired content into a 40" x 30" PowerPoint slide and then printing the slide onto a poster using one of the University’s two poster printers.
Creating a Poster with PowerPoint
Advice for creating the PowerPoint slide for a poster is provided in the Guide to Creating and Printing Posters. The guide includes essential information about how to get your poster printed, tips for preparing the PowerPoint file, and examples of posters from previous Expos.
Printing Posters
Prior to printing, be sure that the content of your PowerPoint slide is at least one inch from the border of the slide (to ensure that all content is printed) and that your slide is free of typos and other errors. Your poster may be printed on either of two poster printers.
- The Arts & Sciences poster printer, located in Walsh 101. The Computer Science Department maintains this printer and keeps it loaded with high-quality poster paper. The A&S printer may be used for academic purposes for free. However, posters may be printed on the A&S printer only by Dr. Chris Hill (chill@sbu.edu, De La Roche 301-C) or by Dr. David Levine (dlevine@sbu.edu, Walsh 111). You may bring the file to one of us by email or flash drive. Please allow 48 hours for your poster to be printed. A digital copy of each poster printed with the A&S printer is saved to facilitate printing additional copies of the poster. Dr. Levine or I will email you once your poster has been printed.
- The Library poster printer, located in the Digital Media Center. This printer is loaded with regular-quality poster paper. The Library imposes a charge per linear foot.
As you can see, there are many advantages to printing your poster with the A&S poster printer. Nevertheless, the Library’s poster printer is an option.
THE DEADLINES FOR BRINGING POSTERS TO DR. HILL are
- Sunday before the reception, if you're sending your PowerPoint file by email to be printed on the A&S printer;
- Tuesday before the reception, if you're printing the poster yourself on the Library printer and you're bringing the poster directly to Dr. Hill.
Mounting Posters
Don’t worry about the mounting of your poster—Dr. Hill will take of this. To prepare a poster for display at the Exposition, the poster is mounted on a sturdy foam board using thumbtacks. Mounted posters are displayed on easels from the QCA.
The SRCE Exposition
The posters will be on display in the Doyle Trustees Room and Dining Room from Wednesday to Friday, as indicated in the Dates & Deadlines at the top of this page. On Friday, a reception will be held in the Trustees Room from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. The entire campus will be invited to view the posters and talk to the participants.
The Reception
The reception is held on the Friday of the Expo from 12:30 to about 2:00. Formal attire is appropriate. It would be helpful if the students could arrive about five minutes early. Just inside one of the entrances to the Trustees Room, there will be a small table on which you’ll find blank name tags and a pen. Students, please use the name tags. Mentors may use their formal SBU name tags or the blank name tags. During the reception, students stand next to their posters and accept compliments and answer questions from admiring visitors. The students will not be making any formal presentations.
I’ve arranged for the Exposition’s reception to that week's Friday Forum, so delicious hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served. Certainly, students may enjoy the food and drink along with everyone else.
After the Expo
After the Exposition, Dr. Hill will return all posters to the mentors.
