Pursuing writing

Kathy Myers
Ever since I stepped foot on campus in the fall of 1986 and met Dr. Russell J. Jandoli, I've wanted to be a writer and tell stories.

That passion began as a dip into journalism (as a newspaper reporter) in 1990 and has morphed into a lengthy career in public relations as I have helped dozens of clients tell their stories to the media. Whether as a reporter or a PR practitioner, I have spent my time since graduating from Bonaventure using words (and the handy AP Stylebook Jandoli espoused!!) to tell powerful stories in the media that have resulted in necessary change and, in a few circumstances, garnered industry awards and affected public policy outcomes.

My education and career path has led me to become the Director of Communications for Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, a statewide children's lobbyist. We represent children at the state and federal levels, and the communications strategies that I direct have helped pass new legislation benefiting the health, education and welfare of our youngest residents.

Guest essays I've penned for educators, physicians, business and community leaders that were published in newspapers across the state helped pass an inaugural state-funded pre-kindergarten program, new high school graduation standards as well as an extension to our Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that guaranteed health coverage to every child in Pennsylvania.

I think of Bonaventure often and my time spent working in campus media. I wouldn't change those years for a second. Everything I learned there - and even some rough times I endured - has led me here, to this rewarding career and time in my life.

Everything I do and the way I live can be tied back to my time on campus as a student pursuing my passion and as a citizen living up to the Franciscan values.
