I am pursuing my passion for locally grown and locally produced food and locally owned restaurants by writing and taking photos for my food blog, Eat First. I launched the blog for fun and as a creative outlet in March 2009, and have a small but growing readership.

The food on the average plate travels 1,500 miles to get there. Food that is raised locally and produced locally is good for the local economy, good for the environment, good for us and our health and – best of all – tastes good.

I am not a shopper/eater/diner who strictly subscribes or adheres to a 100-mile diet, or anything like that. I’m just trying to know where my food comes from, talking to the people who grow and produce it, doing my best to buy and dine local and sharing my delicious discoveries with others in Central New York. You can read my blog at: http://eatfirst.typepad.com.

I studied journalism at St. Bonaventure and at present am a journalist in career transition. I’m a freelance writer and editor in search of a new full-time job opportunity, and spent more than 25 years as a feature writer, copy editor and section editor at The Post-Standard in Syracuse.

I served as writer and editor of the newspaper’s Food section for about five years, until February 2009. I approach my blog like I approached the Food section, working to keep it seasonal, local, timely and appealing to the eye.
