St. Bonaventure University has long valued the military veteran as a member of our campus community. Our 2016 designation by U.S. News & World Report as a Top 20 school in the North for veterans affirms our commitment to veterans and their dependents. Our new Student Veterans Center is staffed by two full-time employees dedicated solely to the needs of veterans as they transition from military to academic life.
The values we cherish — discovery, community and individual worth — create a great enviroment for veterans transitioning to civilian life. These principles are shaped inside and outside the classroom, bolstered by the support of a caring campus community that nurtures mind, body and spirit.
In addition to being a Military Friendly School, part of the Yellow Ribbon Program, St. Bonaventure offers:
Veterans hold key administrative positions at the university, such as Richard Trietley Jr., vice president for Student Affairs, a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army; Michael Leonard, director of Veterans Services; and John Gordnier, assistant director of Veterans Services. (See profiles of their military careers on our Veterans Spotlight page.)
In addition, as faculty and administrators, veterans offer a supportive and inclusive learning environment. As students, they bring unique life experiences, maturity and leadership into the classroom.
St. Bonaventure students and alumni have a deep and proud history of service to their country. Each year, the university honors them on Veterans Day in a ceremony at the campus memorial that recognizes those brave souls from St. Bonaventure who gave their lives in war. Additional veterans-related activities are offered during the year.
Veterans, St. Bonaventure values your service to the nation. We stand ready to facilitate your admission to the university and to provide services to help ensure your academic success. Please take some time to explore our veterans website and to discover the benefits we offer to veterans and their family members.
St. Bonaventure University has earned a gold medal from Militaryfriendly.com, placing it among the top 5 percent of small private colleges for services the university offers to veterans and their families.
Victory Media, originator of the family of Military Friendly® employment, entrepreneurship and education resources for veterans, announced its 2017 awards today for schools that had already been classified as “military friendly.”
Among the 350 small private institutions (fewer than 10,000 students) ranked as “military friendly,” just eight received gold medals. A Top 10 list was the only achievement level higher than gold. Thirteen small colleges received silver medals, and 29 received bronze.
For more than a decade, Military Friendly® ratings have set the standard for companies and colleges demonstrating positive employment and education outcomes for veterans and their families.
“All of our Military Friendly® award recipients set the standard for excellence,” said Daniel Nichols, chief product officer of Victory Media. “They offer exceptional examples of what it means not just to build a program that meets federal requirements, but one that serves the military and veteran community from classrooms to careers.”
Just this year, St. Bonaventure has expanded its outreach to veterans with the development of a Military-Aligned Students program. A full-fledged Veterans Services Center, staffed by a full-time director and assistant director, has opened on the second floor of the Reilly Center.
SBU’s Military-Aligned Student Assistance Grant is intended to assure that 50 percent of tuition charges for all military-aligned students are paid through grants and scholarships that do not have to be repaid.
The university has long been a participant in the federal Yellow Ribbon program, which helps post-9/11 veterans, or their children, attend SBU tuition free through the GI Education Enhancement programs. St. Bonaventure is also ranked a top university by Military Advanced Education and Transition.
“This gold medal is a testament to our university’s long-standing commitment to veterans,” said Rick Trietley, vice president for Student Affairs and a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army who retired in 2008 when he stepped down as the head of SBU’s Army ROTC program.
“Our new Military-Aligned program has allowed us to focus our energies even more on providing a full range of admissions, academic and support services to those who’ve served our country so proudly.”
