Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I'm eligible for study abroad?

Have you maintained a grade point average of at least 2.5? If so, you are probably eligible, but check with the director of international studies to make sure that you qualify.  You also should discuss your plans to study abroad with your faculty adviser.  He/she can help you decide which semester is most academically appropriate, and which program offerings are best suited to your major.

Where will I live?

Living accommodations vary depending on the program. Some students live with families from the host country, others live in dormitories on campus and some live in apartments. More information about living alternatives is available through the international studies program director. No matter what the living situation, you're guaranteed a unique cultural experience.

Do you speak a foreign language?

Each program has its own standards. Check with the director of the study abroad program to see if you need to be proficient in a foreign language before deciding on a program.

When should I begin planning my study abroad program?

Begin investigating your foreign study interests as soon as you arrive on campus; your freshman year.  The earlier you get started the easier it will be to academically plan for a semester away.

How can I pay for it?

Program costs are affordable and students usually book their own flights and housing.  Many scholarships and grants are available for qualified students to offset loss of institutional aid during study abroad.

Do I need a visa or passport?

A passport is one thing without which you cannot travel.  Most countries will not even allow you on a plane to enter another country without a passport.  A visa may not be necessary for where you are going but certain countries do require a visa in addition to a passport just to enter.

How do I request a transcript?

You can request a transcript by downloading, completing, and mailing the form below to the address at the top of the form. Each transcript request requires a $5.00 charge, which can be paid by check or credit card. If you prefer, you can fax the final page of this evaluation with your credit card information directly to the Registrar's office at (716) 375-2135.
