Danny Bush of Belfast, N.Y., received the 2013 Tim Russert Medal of Merit Award at the annual Buffalo Broadcasters Association Awards dinner.
The award includes a $1,000 scholarship from Greater Media Inc. and the BBA.
“Being nominated for the award was an honor, but to win the award was a dream,” Bush said. “The journalism school here is incredible, and the professors have worked in professional fields for a long time. So, to be in their thoughts for the nomination was a powerful feeling.”
Bush, a 2013 graduate, was grateful to Paul Wieland, an instructor in St. Bonaventure University’s Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication, for his advice throughout his education.
“He showed me the ropes when it comes to making a news story good,” Bush said. “He has never been coy about when a project has been good or bad, so that guidance has helped me along the way.”
This is the fourth straight year a St. Bonaventure University journalism and mass communication major has won the award.
Shannon Shepherd, ’12, Lauren Adams, ’11, and Amanda Ciavarri, ’10, won the award the last three years.
In addition to Bush’s award, Bob Koop was honored posthumously with the 2013 BBA Memorial Award.
After working for various television and radio stations throughout his career, Koop joined WIVB, channel 4 in Buffalo, in 1981. Koop died on Jan. 1, 1995, after a 10-year battle with leukemia. After his death, Bob’s parents donated money to St. Bonaventure in 1998 for the creation of the Bob Koop Broadcast Journalism Lab in the Murphy Professional Building.
The Buffalo Broadcasters Foundation was organized in 1996 and is dedicated to preserving and promoting Western New York’s broadcasting history.
