REHABILITATION COUNSELING

Program Overview

St. Bonaventure’s program in Rehabilitation Counseling is located within the NCATE-accredited School of Education.

The program, which leads to an MSED in Counselor Education, provides a sound theoretical foundation in counseling, as well as extended research-based knowledge in the areas of group and individual counseling, counseling techniques, testing and diagnosis.  Extensive hands-on field experiences are required.

This 48-credit program, which is registered by New York state, is designed for individuals who wish to help people with physical, mental, emotional, or social disabilities at various stages in their lives. Rehabilitation counselors help:
  • students to develop strategies to live with their disability and to move from school to work
  • veterans cope with the mental or physical effects of their military service
  • elderly people adapt to disabilities developed later in life due to illness or injury.
Students in the program develop skills in these areas:
  • assessment
  • treatment planning
  • counseling
  • collaboration
  • referral
  • advocacy skills
Class sizes are small, allowing for individualized attention and advisement in regard to your plan of study. Students are able to complete a 48-hour counseling program in two calendar years.

This program prepares individuals for careers in counseling (21-1019.00) which offers good and varied career opportunity, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Students in this program wishing to also obtain a school or mental health counseling credential should consult with their adviser.

Field Experiences

Students are expected to complete an initial Practicum field experience (40 hours of direct counseling) the first year. They are then required, in the second year, to complete two rehabilitation counseling (track specific) internships, each involving 300 clock hours. Site supervisors for the internships must be certified rehabilitation counselors (CRC). The placement process is a collaborative effort among the student, faculty, and field placement coordinator.

Licensing

When you select SBU for your program of study, you are selecting a New York state registered program. Upon successful completion of this degree, and 12 months of acceptable employment experience supervised by a certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC), graduates may apply to take the CRC examination [Category B]. Specific details are located on the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification's Eligibility Requirements website.

Formats and Locations

The Counselor Education Programs are offered in a traditional late afternoon/evening format on the Olean Campus, while the Buffalo Center offers a weekend program at the Hilbert College campus in Hamburg, N.Y. Students at the Buffalo Center are required to take one course on the main campus.
