Requirements For a Bachelor of Science in Childhood Studies

This major is designed for students who are interested in child development and are working towards a career working with children and families but do not intend to become classroom teachers. The major gives students a strong background in child development and an understanding of how to work with children and families in developmentally–appropriate ways. It allows students to choose major electives that align with their career goals. Childhood Studies majors are strongly advised to complete a minor in a field that enhances their career options. † The Clare College curriculum also includes a three-credit quantitative reasoning requirement. Childhood studies majors satisfy this requirement by passing any of the courses listed in the above table under Mathematics.

This major does not lead to teacher certification.

Graduate Requirements for Childhood Studies

In order for students to graduate, all degree requirements must be completed satisfactorily. These include:

  • 2.0 GPA overall
  • Successful completion of internship in Childhood Studies, electronic portfolio and internship presentation
  • Application for graduation and degree audit (registrar)
