This course is an exploration into the art that has helped shape and define American culture and its unique character. We explore the historical, philosophical and theological roots of American art in the 19th century and continue into 20th century art and culture. It is hoped the student will come away with an informed understanding of American cultural life. Our focus is on what makes up the American experience as that is reflected and defined in American art. A New York City field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art also is scheduled.
