Academic Program Highlights

The program at Nanjing University offers students a chance to explore China and take language and culture courses at an introductory level. All students take courses in Chinese language and Culture and choose from other courses taught in English by Nanda faculty: Geography of China, Survey of China's History, Survey of Chinese Literature, and a new political science course. Students may take beginning Mandarin or, after appropriate placement testing, intermedidate or advanced level Mandarin.

An experimental co-curriculum designed to facilitate language acquisition and expand knowledge of Chinese culture includes faculty-led field trips to important historical sites, temples, museums, schools, gardens, and a mosque. A one week field trip to the capital, Beijing, is featured every semester. During on-site orientation, students match up with English-speaking students who act as "cultural interpreters." Through this exchange, students are introduced to student life in China and to on and off campus activities.

Student Life

Students in this CCIS program live with other international students in the Xi Yuan, or "Western Garden," a 20-floor dormitory building that is on the northeast edge of the campus. Students live two to a room in a standard dorm room with a desk and bed. Bed sheets and blankets are provided and changed regularly. Hot water bathrooms are on each floor and a laundry service is available.

The dormitory houses a foreign student/teacher cafeteria, a library, reading rooms, a Xerox and typing room, a weight training and ping pong room, and a small convenience shop and an “E-mail Cafe.” Dorm rooms have phones (the lines can also be used for Internet access if a student has a laptop computer) and students use them buy purchasing phone cards. Rooms are heated and for a small fee room air conditioners can be used. A fax machine is available for student use in the dormitory lobby.

Students eat meals in the foreign student cafeteria in the dorm, in other on-campus cafeterias and small restaurants with Nanjing University students and staff, or off-campus at one of the many nearby cafes. Cooking facilities are also available on most floors if students want to try their hand at Chinese cooking. Nanda clubs, activities, and sports are open to students. Students are encouraged to join!
