Return to CORE main page

Students are encouraged to take FRES 100: Freshman FoundationsAll CORE students are enrolled in a seminar just for CORE students.

FRES 100: Freshman Foundations is a non-credit seminar that meets for 50 minutes once a week during the first semester. It focuses on helping freshman foundation students develop, and having them practice, habits of mind and academic skills that are proven keys to academic success.

The class is taught by graduate students under the supervision of the director of the First-Year Experience program. These graduate students have just successfully completed their own college education – and they have come back for more. They are ready to help others become successful college students.

FRES 100 is graded pass/fail and does show up on a student's college transcript. The key to passing FRES 100 is to attend class and be an active participant. What you put into the class will equal what you get out of it.

How can FRES 100 benefit you?

  • It will help you get on track and stay on track.
  • It will help you figure out how to be successful in college.
  • Students who complete FRES 100 have higher GPAs at the end of their first semester than students who do not complete FRES 100.
  • Students who complete FRES 100 succeed at SBU and stay here.
