St. Bonaventure’s Quick Center, The Ink Well to offer summer art camp for children

May 21, 2014 |

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University, in conjunction with The Ink Well in Allegany, is offering two sessions of a four-day summer art camp for children ages 7 to 11.

Hidden Treasures Summer Art Camp, now in its third year, will offer a first session from Aug. 4 through 7 and a second session from Aug. 11 through 14.

Both Monday-through-Thursday camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Mornings will be spent in and around the Quick Center on the St. Bonaventure campus, with afternoon activities taking place at The Ink Well.

Campers will walk from the campus to The Ink Well each day, stopping on the Allegheny River Valley Trail to enjoy their own bagged lunch. On Thursday, the camp’s last day, campers will be treated to a pizza party at the Ink Well.

This year’s Hidden Treasures Summer Art Camp includes exhibitions and activities aimed at helping campers make a “splash” in the art world. This splash involves introducing campers to new artists or unknown treasures in their own backyards, encouraging campers to express their creativity through different art styles and techniques, and involving them in a number of fun outdoor summer activities.

“We are very excited for this year’s camp. We actually start looking at projects and gathering ideas in January,” said Ink Well owner Melissa Meyers. “Teaching the kids to do the art projects is quite an adventure every year. We do a lot of messy projects with paint and this year will be no exception, so all campers are encouraged to wear old clothes. Campers do not need to already have artistic skills, as we teach everything from how to hold and use a paintbrush to color mixing, building and drawing.”

In the mornings, campers will learn about different styles and methods of modern art paintings on exhibition at the Quick Center. They will learn a new language through figures and symbols, go on a comic adventure, learn how to make everyday objects into masterpieces, and go behind the scenes at the Quick Center art galleries.

Afternoon art projects will have campers creating their own 2D and 3D work based on the works of modern and contemporary artists viewed at the Quick Center. Campers will also experience the broad range of what it means to be an “artist,” with an introduction this year to edible art.

All materials are included with the camp registration fee. The only things children need to bring with them, other than their lunch, are a good attitude and their imagination, said Meyers.

Campers should come prepared for activities outside and dress for each day’s weather forecast. While they will not be taken outdoors in a thunderstorm, they may venture out in a light rain or in cool weather.

Parents will drop off their children at the Quick Center in the morning at 9 a.m. and pick them up at The Ink Well at 4 p.m. If weather conditions make a walk ill-advised, campers will remain at the Quick Center throughout the day.

The cost for the Hidden Treasures summer camp is $159. Scholarships are available through the Quick Center for qualifying residents. Contact the Quick Center at (716) 375-2494 or quick@sbu.edu for more information.

To register or for more information about the camp, visit The Ink Well at 51 E. Main St., Allegany, or call (716) 373-0326. Each session is limited to 12 campers so early registration is advised.
