The University Ministries team at St. Bonaventure University is encouraging students to take a short study break to calm their nerves before finals.
At 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, the traditional Blessing of the Brains prayer service will take place on the lawn between the Hickey Dining Hall and Devereux Hall (rain or shine).
Fr. Francis DiSpigno, O.F.M., executive director of University Ministries, started the brain blessings two years when he came to the university.
Fr. Francis believes that when people are anxious they need to remember that God is with them, and the blessing of the brains is a way for students to feel a sense of peace before they begin exams.
“There are no atheists in the foxholes,” joked Fr. Francis. “When you’re under pressure, you need something to feel at ease, and that’s what we’re here for.”
Many friars, sisters and campus ministers will be on hand to bless not only students, but even faculty brains.
“Even instructors need some blessing of the brains,” Fr. Francis said. “They have to grade all those papers.”
People of all faith traditions are encouraged to attend the event.
