A faculty member from St. Bonaventure’s School of Education was among the presenters at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention and Expo in St. Louis, Mo., April 1-5.
Paula Scraba, O.S.F., Ph.D., associate professor of physical education, had the honor of being selected to co-present with Annette Lynch, senior manager of Coaching Excellence and Sport Education for Special Olympics North America, at the convention.
St. Bonaventure’s Special Olympics Initiative Programs were selected as model program nationwide for the partnerships with Special Olympics of New York, the largest Special Olympics program in North America and the sixth largest in the world.
Scraba and Lynch’s presentation topic was “Meaningful Inclusion in Physical Education: Special Olympics Unified Sports® Curriculum Outline.”
Special Olympics has developed an inclusive physical education curriculum called “Unified Sports PE.” Students with and without intellectual disabilities take this class to build sports skills, form new friendships and even attend local Special Olympics competitions.
This workshop provided convention participants with the necessary resources to take back to their schools. Additionally, discussions included community and university partnerships as well as support for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act through inclusive Special Olympics programming. Participants received (CEUs) credits for attending the session.
