St. Bonaventure University will host Dr. Judith Buddenbaum, professor emerita in the Department of Journalism & Technical Communication at Colorado State University, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the Dresser Auditorium of the John J. Murphy Professional Building.
The lecture, titled “Religious Scandals: Can People Do Whatever They Want in the Name of Religion?”, is free and open to the public and will be followed by a Q&A session.
Dr. Buddenbaum’s talk will explore the limits of First Amendment protection of “scandalous” acts that people have performed or sought to justify in the name of religion. The talk will draw on material from a book she published in 2009 on media coverage of religious scandals in American history.
As a leading scholar in the field of religion and media, Buddenbaum taught for more than 20 years at Colorado State University, which has one of the strongest programs on religion and media in the country. Prior to moving to Colorado State, she worked as a reporter and taught at Indiana University and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
During the course of her academic career, Buddenbaum has authored or edited six books on media coverage of religion and published several dozen book chapters and journal articles on similar subjects. She has directed nearly 20 professional workshops around the country and conducted more than 20 funded research projects.
Buddenbaum’s visit is sponsored by the St. Bonaventure Visiting Scholars Program and the Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication. For more information, contact Dr. Pauline Hoffmann at 375-2578 or email@example.com.
