During the summer of 2011, the Arts Education Program at the Quick Center continued the Summer Library program for the third consecutive year. Museum Educator Miranda Earley and education student Shauna Klotz drove the ArtMobile to Libraries in both New York and Pennsylvania. From Randolph, NY to Port Allegany, Pa the ArtMobile delivered fun, educational, and engaging art lessons to area libraries and the children and adults within the library community. The ArtMobile visited nine libraries once a week for three weeks, including Portville, Olean, Cuba, Belfast, Salamanca, Randolph, the Bookmobile at Duke Center, and Port Allegany. The ArtMobile arrived on site complete with lessons, art materials, resources, short stories, and actual artifacts from the Quick Center’s collection.
The art lessons were aligned with the 2011 National Library theme “One World Many Stories”. Each week, children received a take-home brochure, complete with colorful pictures, a folktale and family activities. The first week students learned about Japanese Ukiyo-e wood block prints and made their own prints in the form of note cards. During week two students made Wampum buttons after learning about the Native Americans Wampum Belt’s role in telling stories and recording history. In the final week students made African masks. Using only recycled materials students made an African mask and learned how masks were a major part of the culture and used for various celebrations and rituals. |
