Participate in Sketching Program

For centuries, young artists have traveled to notable
museums, sketching masterpieces and learning about the
elements of art and artistic styles of legendary artists.
European art academies encouraged students to copy and
interpret works of the masters. Before the camera, visitors
would look carefully and reflect on the artwork by sketching
and drawing, rather than snapping a picture.

The Sketching Program at the Quick Center began with SBU
classes in the Visual and Performing Arts Department being
held in the galleries, with students coming back to the Quick
Center to sketch and complete assignments. Middle and high
school students from both Allegany Limestone Central School
and Olean City Schools came to the Quick Center with their
Art teachers for mornings of sketching activities. Following a
brief tour of the galleries (many students had been through
the galleries earlier in the year), students were given museum
stools, sketching totes, paper, and sketching pencils and
encouraged to sketch a work of art from the Quick Center
galleries.
