On Monday, October 25, 2011, eight-five third graders from Allegany- Limestone Central School came to the Quick Center for a World Tour. Francine Potter, a docent with the Quick Center since its opening, attracted some attention by revealing to the children that she was the mother of Mrs Pendl - their second grade teacher! |

Part of the third grade curriculum is the study of world cultures. The third grade world tour at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts takes the children through four continents, experiencing art and culture from many countries. The tour begins with a stop in Europe, where children study a work of art from the Netherlands, using their imaginations to make up stories about the painting. This is followed by a reading of the old Italian folktale, Stregga Nona. The next stop is Asia, where the children observe artifacts and prints from China, Japan and Korea. The students are then given some homework: To write a story about the Lohan and three artifacts in the gallery. Up the stairs, children stop in the African exhibit where they learn about masks, drums, and other musical instruments and do a sketching activity. The final stop is the 20th century gallery where they learn about the American artistsʼ use of cubism, expressionism, and surrealism. They are then asked to write a story using every day symbols, imitating the style of Keith Haring. Click here for downloads of the lesson plans. |
